Clarke Hinkle Jersey .C. -- Panthers Pro Bowl defensive end Greg Hardy will spend Tuesday night in jail after being arrested on misdemeanour charges of assault on a female and communicating threats. Mecklenburg County Sheriffs Office Spokeswoman Julia Rush said in an email to The Associated Press Hardy will spend the night in Mecklenburg County jail and will have a court appearance Wednesday morning in Charlotte. Hardy turned himself in Tuesday and was transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriffs Office where he was booked. He appeared before the magistrate where he was not issued bond. It is normal procedure for suspects in domestic violence cases to be denied bond as part of a 24-hour cooling off period. The Panthers said in a statement, "We are very disappointed to learn of the allegations involving Greg and are concerned for all parties as we continue to investigate." Hardys agent Drew Rosenhaus declined comment to The Associated Press. Hardy signed the teams franchise tag tender in March and will make $13.116 million this season if he doesnt sign an extension before July 15. The 25-year-old Hardy has 26 sacks over the past two seasons with the Panthers, including a franchise-tying 15 in 2013. According to the police report, patrol officers responded to a domestic violence assault call for service at 4:18 a.m. Tuesday in Charlotte. The report states that upon arrival officers spoke to the victim, a 24-year-old white female, who advised that she had been physically assaulted and threatened by Hardy. The victim also stated that she and Hardy had been in a relationship since September 2013. The report also states the victim suffered bruises and scratches, but refused treatment. After talking with the woman, police obtained warrants to arrest Hardy. The Panthers recently agreed to give Hardy a $1.3 million advance on his franchise tag if he attends the teams voluntary off-season workouts. Hardy has been a flamboyant personality since joining the Panthers and regularly refers to himself as the "Kraken," after a mythical sea creature. A motorcycle accident before his second season with the team left Hardy with severe skin burns and prevented him from participating in the teams training camp, although he still made it back for the 2011 season. He has long been one of the outspoken players in the locker room, predicting a late-season win against Atlanta in 2012. He has also been one of the most productive the past two seasons, earning him the franchise tag tender even though the Panthers are strapped under the salary cap. By keeping Hardy, the Panthers were forced to let other free agents walk, including safety Mike Mitchell, cornerback Captain Munnerlyn and wide receivers Brandon LaFell, Ted Ginn Jr. and Domenik Hixon. The Professional Soccer Referee Association was certified by the National Labor Relations Board last May to represent referees, assistant referees and fourth officials working MLS games. It has not reached an agreement with the Professional Referee Organization, which was created by the U.S. Soccer Federation and MLS in 2012 to manage game officials in U.S. and Canadian professional leagues. The PSRA has filed a pair of unfair labour practice charges with the NLRBs New York office, accusing the PRO of bad-faith bargaining and making threats against PSRA members. PSRA members voted 64-1 last month to authorize an unfair labour practice strike. "We will be opening up this weekend with referees, and we are absolutely in a position to have a contingency plan in the event that those discussions dont end positively," MLS Commissioner Don Garber said Tuesday. "We have so many things that were gearing up for with our 2014 season. Nothing is going to stop us from having a strong opening and to continue to grow this league." PSRA chairman Steve Taylor said there are economic and non-economic issues. "They have not made significant movement," he said of the PRO. Answering questions from reporters and fans during a season kickoff session, Garber said increasing the leagues television ratings is a priority. Viewers for national television broadcasts during the regular season dropped from an average of 180,000 viewers in 2012 to 170,000 last year, according to Nielsen Media Research. MLS has been negotiating with ESPN and Fox to replace deals with ESPN and NBC that expire at the end of this season. Garber said while quality of play, attendance, soccer-specific stadiums have increased, "our national television ratings have not grown at the same level." That time is probably sooner as opposed to later." Austin, Texas, and San Antonio: "Its premature for both markets. ... Expanding in Texas is something thats likely going to happen. Where that happens, when that happens is still to be seen." Cleveland: "There havent been any discussions of late. What I would say to folks that are living in Cincinnati, the folks that are living in Dayton, folks that are living Cleveland, support the Crew," a reference to the Columbus team. Detroit: "There havent been any discussions. Not sure its on the short list, but you never know." Minneapolis: "On the short list. Lots of interest there."
